While traditional metal braces are a very effective method for straightening teeth, and even have various alternative treatment methods, the Invisalign system takes a different approach to helping you get that perfect, straight smile without the need for wires or brackets. For those who are self-conscious about how they look with braces, this program was designed just for you.
What Is Invisalign?
The Invisalign process makes it possible to straighten your teeth and achieve the same results as traditional braces using a system of personalized clear aligners. Unlike conventional braces, these aligners are removable and are nearly undetectable. This means you can straighten your teeth without relying on wires, brackets, and other obvious metal parts. The aligners are also custom-fitted to your mouth to ensure a comfortable fit.
How Invisalign Works
It typically takes between 6 and 15 months of treatment time to complete the straightening process. You will wear a new set of aligners every two weeks, with each new set gradually moving your teeth further and further to the end goal. Depending on the complexity of your case, you may wear anywhere from 18 to 30 sets over the course of treatment. Unlike braces, you can remove your aligners to eat, drink, and brush your teeth. It is extremely important that you wear them any time you’re not eating or brushing, as consistency will ensure that the treatment process remains on schedule.
Invisalign Teen is a version of the system that is customized with some extra features designed just for teens. Since some of their of their molars may not have fully grown in, special "eruption tabs" are added to the aligners to give some room for those teeth to grow in properly. Another added feature are the "compliance indicators" which are small, pieces of colored material that will fade when worn for the prescribed amount of time. The purpose of these compliance indicators is to ensure that the aligners are being worn, ensuring that the treatment is kept on track.
Advantages Of Invisalign
Patients often report great satisfaction with the Invisalign system because it offers many distinct advantages over metal braces. These advantages include:
Caring for Your Teeth During Invisalign Treatment
During your Invisalign treatment, you need to brush your teeth after ever meal or snack in order to get rid of any food particles or bacteria that could be left over. If you don't clean your teeth, all of that bacteria will be tightly sealed against your teeth, eventually developing into plaque and making it very easy to develop tooth decay or gum disease.
You will also need to clean your aligners on a regular basis, which is a very simple process since they're removable. All you need to do is give your aligners a thorough brushing with your toothbrush and some toothpaste, then rinse off with some warm water. If not properly cared for, the aligners can actually start to become slightly discolored, which is not very appealing despite being replaced by a new aligner in a short period of time.
