If you want to straighten your teeth, nothing does the job better than braces. Not only will you enjoy that boost in confidence from having the perfect smile you’ve always wanted, but it will also be easier to keep your mouth clean and healthy in the long run. However, after you’ve decided to get braces, there’s another important decision that you have to make: What kind of braces do you want?
Everyone has different preferences when it comes to their smile and having braces, with some being more self-conscious about their appearance or wanting to be more comfortable. That’s why advancements in orthodontic technology have worked to bring new types of braces for you to choose from based on your needs. At WGM Orthodontics, we proudly offer those different options to you and your family. Below you’ll find the different types of braces that we offer, and some more detail about the advantages of each.

Modern Metal Braces
Metal braces are still a very effective and affordable type of orthodontic treatment, with technological advances only making them more efficient and comfortable. Modern metal braces are also smaller, making them less noticeable and aesthetically appealing. They can also be customized with colored elastic bands to add a bit of personality.
Metal braces are made from high-grade stainless steel that is strong and light, so they are not only durable, but comfortable as well. Beyond just the metal brackets attached to the front of your teeth, there are metal bands that wrap around your molars, and a thin, metal wire called an “archwire” that strings through the brackets. All of these components work together to apply a very small, concentrated amount of pressure to gently move your teeth into their proper position. The amount of time that it takes to achieve that perfect smile varies from case to case, so speak with your local WGM orthodontist about your treatment plan!
Clear Ceramic Braces
Designed for those who are worried about how they would look with metal braces, this option replaces those metal brackets with a translucent ceramic material, which blends perfectly with the natural color of your teeth and makes your braces less noticeable. The brackets are also stain resistant, so they will retain their translucent look throughout your treatment. This treatment option is very popular among adults due to its aesthetic appeal.
As a tradeoff for being more discreet, the clear brackets are not as durable than traditional metal braces. Also, while the brackets themselves are resistant to staining, the elastic bands that are used to attach the brackets to the archwire can stain if not properly cared for, although they are usually replaced every month at your normal scheduled orthodontic appointment. If you have any questions about clear braces, speak to your local WGM orthodontist!
This treatment option utilizes a unique bracket and wire system that allows the wire to slide between the braces as your teeth move into place, eliminating the need for the elastic ties to hold the wire in place. Since the wire can move smoothly through the brackets, there is less pressure being exerted on your teeth, making self-ligating braces more comfortable. While they do not have a clear bracket option, they are also made from the same resilient stainless steel and have small brackets just like traditional metal braces.
